His Eminence, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York - "Leadership and Modern Popes"
- 15 August 2014
The Business Network luncheon held at the Sydney Hilton on Friday, 15 August hosted over 200 members and guests in by far its largest event. Expectations ran high for a highly entertaining presentation from the guest speaker – His Eminence, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York. Widely recognised beyond his native USA thanks to a strong media profile (Cardinal Dolan hosts the annual Al Smith Dinner which is typically attended by top-tier guests including the US President), the visiting Archbishop spoke eloquently on the topic of Leadership and Modern Popes.
Cardinal Dolan’s skilful responses to questions from the packed room revealed a fine intellect, political savvy and an affable humour. He focused on our most recent popes to highlight the Catholic Church’s mission to engage its flock on three levels, with each leader offering a unique challenge to the faithful, engaging the soul, the mind and the heart. Pope John Paul II received praise for bringing faith back into his native Poland (and consequently, contributing to the fall of Communism); Pope Benedict XVI for urging blind worship be tempered by reason and more famously, recognising his human frailty and acting courageously on it; and Pope Francis for reminding us to use our hearts.
